Belém and the riverside in six hours
Market lunch in the centre, tram 15E downriver, then the monastery, the monument and the tower on foot.
Belém is the half of Lisbon that the guidebooks put on a separate day and most visitors squeeze into an afternoon. Six hours is honestly enough, provided the tram does the 6 km downriver and your legs do only the last stretch along the water. Go on a weekday: the monastery queue on a Sunday can cost an hour on its own.
The route, stop by stop
-
Praça do Comércio
Start on the river again — this route heads west instead of uphill.

Time Out Market
Early lunch before the counters fill. Cheaper and better than anything in Belém.
45 min here Walk here → -
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
Arrive by tram from the previous stop
Take the 15E from Cais do Sodré. Book the cloister ahead or lose an hour to the queue.
-
Padrão dos Descobrimentos
Cross under the road to the waterfront monument and its compass-rose pavement.
25 min here Walk here → -
Torre de Belém
Ten minutes further along the water. The interior is small; the queue is not.
-
Pastéis de Belém
Walk back east and sit inside rather than joining the takeaway queue.
