After the earthquake of 1755 Lisbon rebuilt its centre on a grid, and in the 1880s it pushed a boulevard north from it: the Avenida da Liberdade, paved in black and white mosaic and lined now with the city's luxury shops. This route walks it uphill to the Parque Eduardo VII and on to the Gulbenkian, where the collection Calouste Gulbenkian made from his oil fortune sits in one of Lisbon's best gardens.

  1. Praça dos Restauradores

The obelisk remembers the restoration of Portugal's independence from Spain in 1640. The yellow Elevador da Glória climbs from the corner.
