Príncipe Real, at the top of the hill above the Bairro Alto, is Lisbon's smartest small neighbourhood: 19th-century mansions around a garden square, antique shops and concept stores. This route crosses it and goes down through the university's botanical garden to the reservoir at the end of the aqueduct that brought the city its water.

  1. Jardim do Príncipe Real

A garden square whose great cedar has been trained into a parasol wide enough to shade a café. Below it is the Patriarcal reservoir of 1864, open as a small museum.

  2. Embaixada

A neo-Moorish palace of the 1870s turned into a gallery of Portuguese designers' shops around a courtyard.

  3. Jardim Botânico de Lisboa

The university's botanical garden, laid out in the 1870s down a steep slope, with palms, cycads and a butterfly house.

  4. Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras

The reservoir where the Águas Livres aqueduct ended, a stone hall around a still tank. Climb to its roof for the view.

  5. Jardim das Amoreiras

A small square planted with mulberry trees for the royal silk factory, under the last arches of the aqueduct.
