The Gothic Quarter and El Born in three hours
Plaça de Catalunya down through the medieval core to El Born and out at the beach.
The whole of old Barcelona fits inside a square kilometre, which is why three hours is genuinely enough and why the route is almost entirely downhill: Plaça de Catalunya sits about 30 m above the water and the sea is a straight walk south-east. Go in the morning if you want the cathedral cloister quiet, or start at four and finish on the sand. The one thing worth timing is the cathedral — it closes to sightseeing visitors over the middle of the day.

The seam between the old city and the grid. Everything from here runs downhill to the water.

Go for the cloister and its thirteen geese rather than the nave. Free entry outside sightseeing hours, ticketed during them.

A single enclosed medieval square with no cafes in it, which is why it stays quiet two streets from the cathedral.

The merchants' church, built in 55 years and all the better for it. Walk in free; the roof terrace tour is separate and worth it.

Barceloneta Beach
Finish where the old city runs out. Ten minutes from El Born and the reason to walk this direction rather than the reverse.
