Rome end to end in twelve hours
Vatican at opening, the centro storico over lunch, the ancient core at golden hour. Five kilometres, nine stops.
One day in Rome is a compromise, but it is a compromise with a correct order. The Vatican Museums open at eight and shut in the early afternoon, so they go first and everything else follows downhill and east. The middle of the day is the centro storico, where nothing needs a ticket and the walking is short. The Forum and the Colosseum go last because late afternoon is when the light gets into the ruins and the tour groups have gone. Eleven hours of stops in a twelve-hour day — the twelfth is lunch and the sitting down you will want by four.

Vatican Museums
First entry, booked weeks ahead. Three hours is the honest minimum to reach the Sistine Chapel without running the last four galleries.

St Peter's Basilica
Leave the Sistine Chapel by the right-hand door and you come out beside the basilica instead of back at the entrance — it saves the queue and half an hour.

Castel Sant'Angelo
A kilometre along the river. Skip the interior if you are behind schedule; the ramparts are the part worth the ticket.

Piazza Navona
Cross the Tiber at Ponte Sant'Angelo into the centro storico. Nothing here needs a ticket for the rest of the afternoon.

Lunch. The market winds down around two and the restaurants on the square are worse than the ones one street off it.

Pantheon
Free to enter on weekdays with a booked slot, ticketed otherwise. Go in and look up rather than photographing the portico.

Trevi Fountain
Ten minutes east and the most crowded 25 m in Rome. Worth it at any hour, marginally calmer after dark.

Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Late afternoon, which is the whole reason it is last: low sun along the Via Sacra and the groups gone.

Colosseum
Book the last slot of the day. Ten minutes from the Forum exit and the right place to stop walking.
