Vespasian started the Colosseum around 70 AD on the drained lake of Nero's private palace — a pointed political gesture, handing the tyrant's pleasure garden back to the people as a public arena. His son Titus inaugurated it in 80 AD with a hundred days of games. At capacity it held about 50,000 spectators, seated strictly by class, all of whom could be evacuated in minutes through 76 numbered gates — the same crowd-flow design stadiums use today.

The standard ticket buys the first and second tiers plus, within 24 hours, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill next door — treat the three as one visit. The "Full Experience" ticket adds the arena floor and the underground hypogeum, the two-level backstage where animals and fighters waited in the dark before being winched up through trapdoors. The underground is the part that makes the violence feel real, and it's worth the upgrade on a first visit.

Tickets are named — passport checked at the gate — because scalpers used to hoover up the entire allotment. Book on the official site exactly 30 days out for peak season; the 8:30 AM first slot or the last two hours before close are the only quiet windows. Avoid anyone selling "skip the line" on the street outside; there is no line to skip if you have a timed ticket.

For the classic exterior photo, walk up Via Nicola Salvi towards the Oppian Hill park — elevated, tree-framed, and empty at sunrise. The interior is most photogenic from the second tier on the north side, looking across the hypogeum with the Arch of Constantine behind.

  • Passport or ID matching the named ticket (checked at the gate)
  • Phone charged for the timed-entry QR code
  • Water bottle — refill fountains inside, none mid-visit
  • Sun hat May–Sep: the upper tiers are shadeless
  • Small bag only — backpacks go through X-ray, big ones refused
