Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain in three hours

Campo de' Fiori's market, Bernini's fountain in a Roman stadium, the best-kept building of ancient Rome, a painted dome that is not there, and the fountain everyone throws a coin into.

The centro storico, in the bend of the Tiber, is the Rome of piazzas and fountains, built over the ancient city and largely rebuilt in the baroque. Its sights are a few minutes apart, so this route is more standing still than walking. Start at the market in the morning and reach the Trevi Fountain before lunch, or come back to it after dark, when the crowds thin.

  1. Campo de' Fiori

The morning market square, watched over by the hooded statue of Giordano Bruno, who was burned for heresy on this spot in 1600.

  2. Piazza Navona

The square keeps the long shape of the stadium of Domitian it was built over. Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers stands in the middle.

  3. Pantheon

Hadrian's temple of around 125 AD, still roofed by the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, open to the sky at its centre. A ticket has been needed since 2023.

  4. Sant'Ignazio

The Jesuits never built the dome, so in 1685 Andrea Pozzo painted one on the flat ceiling. Stand on the marble disc in the nave to see the illusion work.

  5. Trevi Fountain

Nicola Salvi's baroque fountain, finished in 1762 at the end of an ancient aqueduct. Throw a coin over your shoulder to be sure of coming back to Rome.
