While the city was divided, Charlottenburg was the centre of West Berlin and the Kurfürstendamm its shop window. This route starts at the baroque palace the Prussian kings built for Queen Sophie Charlotte, then takes the bus to the Ku'damm and walks it to the KaDeWe, the largest department store in continental Europe.

  1. Charlottenburg Palace

The largest palace in Berlin, begun in 1695 as a summer house for Sophie Charlotte, the wife of the first king of Prussia. The New Wing and the gardens down to the Spree are the best of it.
