Tempelhof airport closed in 2008, and two years later Berliners were let onto its runways; in a referendum in 2014 they voted to keep the whole field open. This route crosses it from the terminal that handled the Berlin Airlift of 1948 and 1949 to Neukölln, where the streets along the field's edge and the old Bohemian village of Rixdorf have become one of the liveliest parts of the city.

  1. Tempelhof Airport

The vast curved terminal of the 1930s, one of the largest buildings in Europe, through which the Airlift kept West Berlin supplied in 1948 and 1949. Guided tours go inside.

  2. Tempelhofer Feld

The runways now belong to kite-surfers, skaters and cyclists, with community gardens and barbecue areas. It is a long way across; allow for it.

  3. Schillerkiez

The streets on the field's eastern edge, around the church on Herrfurthplatz, now full of cafés and bars.

  4. Rixdorf

The centre of old Rixdorf, settled by Bohemian Protestant refugees in the 1730s, with a blacksmith's forge and cottages still standing around the square.
