Prenzlauer Berg was a district of working-class tenements in East Berlin, left to decay under the GDR and taken over by artists and dissidents in the 1980s. After reunification it was restored building by building, and it is now one of the most sought-after parts of the city, full of young families and cafés. On Sundays, finish at the Mauerpark's flea market and open-air karaoke.

  1. Wasserturm

Berlin's oldest water tower, from 1877, its round brick bulk above a small park. In 1933 the SA used its engine house as one of the first concentration camps.
