Mahanakhon SkyWalk
Thailand's highest observation deck — 78 floors up the pixelated tower, with a glass floor hanging 310 metres over Silom.
About Mahanakhon SkyWalk
King Power Mahanakhon is the skyscraper that looks like a rendering error on purpose: a 314-metre glass tower with a ribbon of "missing" pixels spiralling up its full height, designed by Ole Scheeren and briefly Thailand's tallest building. The dissolving cube facade made it Bangkok's most recognisable silhouette the week it topped out; the SkyWalk up its crown made it the city's best high-altitude hour.
The visit is engineered as theatre. A video-lined lift does the 74 floors in under a minute, ears popping on schedule. The indoor deck gives you the labelled panorama and the augmented-reality viewfinders; one more short lift reaches the 78th-floor rooftop — the highest open-air deck in Thailand — where the city unrolls to the horizon: the Chao Phraya coiling past Wat Arun to the west, the green lung of Bang Krachao downriver, and at dusk the whole grid lighting up section by section.
The famous part is the Glass Tray: a transparent ledge cantilevered off the tower's edge at 310 metres, which you shuffle onto in supplied shoe covers while your phone (in the mandatory lanyard case) records your dignity failing. The queue for it doubles after sunset — do the tray first, then settle in with a drink from the rooftop bar for the light change.
Timing is everything and the answer is 90 minutes before sunset: full daylight panorama, golden hour, the sunset itself, and the city-lights version, all on one ticket. Haze is thickest in the hot-season afternoons (March–May), so mornings win in those months. Buy the timed ticket online — walk-up pricing is worse and sunset slots cap out — and check the combo pricing with a drink included, which usually beats buying the drink upstairs. BTS Chong Nonsi station connects almost directly; you are inside the lift four minutes after the turnstile.
