Asiatique occupies the century-old docks of the Danish East Asiatic Company, the trading houses that ran Siam's teak exports — and the renovation kept the good bones: long timber warehouses, rail tracks in the floor, cranes left standing as sculpture. It reopened in 2012 as an open-air night bazaar and has settled into its role as Bangkok's easiest evening: 1,500 stalls and shops sorted into themed warehouse "districts," a riverside boardwalk of restaurants, and the 60-metre Asiatique Sky wheel throwing light across the Chao Phraya.

Be clear what it is: the polished, priced-accordingly cousin of the street markets, not their replacement. You come for the setting — dinner tables at the water's edge with the river traffic sliding past, the wheel overhead, a breeze the inland markets never get. The shopping runs from decent Thai design and tailors to standard souvenir fare; haggling is gentle and card machines are everywhere. For the raw version you still go to Chatuchak on a weekend morning; for a first-night-in-Bangkok soft landing with kids or grandparents in tow, Asiatique is unbeatable.

The resident showpiece is Calypso, Bangkok's longest-running cabaret: a 70-minute ladyboy revue of sequins, showgirl numbers and genuinely sharp lip-sync comedy in a plush theatre inside the complex. It's glamorous, self-aware and family-appropriate in the way of classic cabaret; the ticket-with-dinner packages are the smooth way to build the evening around the 8:15 or 9:45 show.

Getting there is half the charm: the free shuttle boat runs from Sathorn Pier (under BTS Saphan Taksin) every 15–30 minutes from 4 PM, and the ride upriver at dusk — Wat Arun lit up on the far bank — is better than most paid cruises. Arrive by 6 for the golden-hour boardwalk, eat by 7:30, show at 8:15, wheel last: the city looks best from up there after dark.

  • Sathorn Pier by 6 PM for the free boat at golden hour
  • Calypso tickets pre-booked around the 8:15 show
  • Appetite management: boardwalk dinner beats the food court
  • Card + some cash; stalls take both, boat needs nothing
  • Sky wheel last — the city is best from up there after dark
