Tsukiji, Ginza and the Imperial Palace in six hours
Breakfast at the old fish market, tea in a shogun's tidal garden, the kabuki theatre, Ginza's crossing and the gardens of the Imperial Palace.
The fish auctions left Tsukiji for Toyosu in 2018, but the outer market of food stalls and knife shops stayed. This route starts there at breakfast, takes tea in a garden on the bay, walks into Ginza, Tokyo's grandest shopping street since the Meiji era, and ends at the Imperial Palace, on the site of the shoguns' Edo Castle. The East Gardens close on Mondays and Fridays.

Tsukiji Outer Market
Several hundred shops and stalls: rolled omelette, grilled scallops, sushi counters and knife makers. Go early, as much of it closes by early afternoon, and many shops shut on Sundays and Wednesdays.

A shogun's garden on the bay whose pond rises and falls with the tide. Matcha and a sweet are served in the teahouse on the island.

Kabuki-za
Tokyo's kabuki theatre, rebuilt in 2013 behind its traditional front. Single-act tickets, sold on the day, let you watch one act without giving up a whole afternoon.

Ginza crossing
The clock tower of the Wako building, from 1932, marks the main crossing of Tokyo's grandest shopping district. On weekend afternoons Chuo-dori is closed to traffic.
