West of Shibuya, Daikanyama and Nakameguro are where Tokyo shops slowly: small boutiques, design shops and coffee rather than department stores. This route goes from Daikanyama's hilltop down to the Meguro River. The end of March and the start of April, when the cherry trees along the river flower, are the best and busiest time of the year.

  1. Daikanyama T-Site

Tsutaya's bookshop of three linked pavilions wrapped in a lattice of interlocking Ts, with a lounge upstairs for reading what you have not bought yet.

  2. Hillside Terrace

Fumihiko Maki's low-rise complex of shops and galleries, built in stages between 1969 and 1992, which set the tone for the whole neighbourhood.

  3. Kyu Asakura House

A wooden house of 1919 built for a Tokyo politician, with tatami rooms looking onto a garden on the slope. One of the few such houses left in central Tokyo.
