The islands of Toyosu and Odaiba were built on landfill in Tokyo Bay, and they are where the city puts what it has no room for elsewhere: the fish market, exhibition halls, malls and museums. They are joined by the Yurikamome, a driverless train that loops over the water, which this route rides between stops. Book teamLab Planets for the first slot of the day.

  1. teamLab Planets

A digital art museum walked through barefoot, some of its rooms knee-deep in water. Wear trousers that roll up.

  2. Toyosu Market

Tokyo's wholesale fish market since 2018. The tuna auction is watched from a gallery before dawn; by late morning the draw is the sushi counters inside.

A life-size robot from the Gundam anime, nearly 20 metres tall, outside the DiverCity mall. It transforms several times a day.

  5. Rainbow Bridge

The suspension bridge across the harbour has a free walkway on each side, about 1.7 km long, with the view of central Tokyo. Closed in bad weather and on some days each month.
