The Eiffel Tower was built for the World's Fair of 1889 and had a permit to stand for twenty years. This route starts with the view of it everyone knows, from across the river, goes up it, and then walks east across the 7th arrondissement, past the army's Invalides and Rodin's house and garden, to Saint-Germain-des-Prés, whose cafés were the Left Bank's offices after the war.

  1. Trocadéro

The terrace of the Palais de Chaillot, built for the exhibition of 1937, looks straight across the Seine at the tower. Early morning is the only time it is not crowded.

  2. Eiffel Tower

Book a timed ticket for the lifts, or climb the 674 steps to the second floor. The summit is reached by lift only.

  3. Champ de Mars

The old parade ground of the military school at its far end, now the lawn from which to look back up at the tower.

  4. Les Invalides

Louis XIV's hospital for old and wounded soldiers. Napoleon's tomb lies under the gilded dome, and the Army Museum fills the wings around it.

  5. Musée Rodin

Rodin's last home and studio, an 18th-century mansion whose garden holds The Thinker and The Gates of Hell among the roses.

  6. Le Bon Marché

The department store that set the pattern for the rest, from 1852. La Grande Épicerie, its food hall, is the place for a picnic.

  7. Saint-Germain-des-Prés

The oldest church in Paris, with a Romanesque bell tower from around the year 1000. Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, where Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir wrote, are across the street.
