Around 1900 the Lower East Side was one of the most crowded places on earth, packed with Jewish, Italian, Irish and Chinese immigrants in five-storey tenements. This route eats its way through what they left: the delis, the market, the cannoli and the dumplings, with the museum and the synagogue that tell the story in between. Come hungry and pace yourself.

  1. Tenement Museum

Guided tours of restored apartments at 97 Orchard Street, each furnished as a real immigrant family lived in it. Tours only, and they sell out: book ahead.
