Harlem was the capital of Black America in the 1920s, when the Harlem Renaissance filled its clubs and magazines with Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and Duke Ellington. This route walks its main streets and its finest blocks. Sunday morning is the time for gospel: go to a service as a guest rather than a spectator, and dress for church.

  1. Apollo Theater

Ella Fitzgerald won one of its first Amateur Nights in 1934, and the contest still runs on Wednesday nights.

  2. Schomburg Center

The New York Public Library's research centre for Black history and culture. Langston Hughes's ashes lie under the cosmogram in the floor of its lobby.

  3. Abyssinian Baptist Church

One of the oldest Black congregations in the country, where Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was pastor while he sat in Congress. Visitors queue outside for the Sunday service.

  4. Strivers' Row

Two blocks of 1890s rowhouses by three architects, Stanford White among them, which became home to Harlem's Black professionals. The signs on the alleys behind still say: walk your horses.
