The best way to cross from Europe to Asia is the commuter ferry, twenty minutes for the price of a bus ticket. Kadıköy, where it lands, is where Istanbul's students and writers moved, and its market streets are the best place in the city to eat. This route takes the ferry, eats through the market and walks down to Moda's seafront for the sunset over the old city.

  1. Ferry from Eminönü

Take the ferry to Kadıköy. Sit on the open deck for the view back to the Topkapı Palace and Hagia Sophia, and buy a glass of tea on board.

  2. Kadıköy Market

The streets behind the pier are a market of fishmongers, pickle shops, delis and meyhanes. Çiya Sofrası, on Güneşlibahçe Sokak, cooks Anatolian dishes rarely found elsewhere in the city.
