Galata and Beyoğlu in three hours
Over the bridge from the old city, up to the tower, then the length of İstiklal to Taksim.
Everything in the six-hour route is on the peninsula the Byzantines and Ottomans built. This crosses the Golden Horn to the side the Genoese, then the Europeans, then the republic built — and it is uphill the whole way, steeply, from the water to the tower. Do it in the late afternoon: the tower view is best an hour before sunset and İstiklal only really fills up after dark.

Galata Bridge
Two decks — anglers above, fish restaurants below. The walk across is the best free view of the old-city skyline there is.

Karaköy
Ship chandlers and hardware shops that turned into coffee roasters without fully evicting the chandlers. The steep lanes up from here are the shortcut to the tower.

Galata Tower
Genoese, 1348, and for centuries the tallest thing in the city. The queue is real; the balcony is worth it. Buy online.

Çiçek Pasajı
An 1876 arcade of meyhane tables off İstiklal, and the anchor for walking the avenue — İstiklal itself is a kilometre and a half of shopfronts with a red tram down the middle.

Taksim Square
The top of the hill and the end of the avenue. Not beautiful, but it is the city's public square in the political sense and worth standing in for a moment.
