Dubrovnik's single most underrated fact is angular: the city was built to be seen from the sea. Every tower, every stretch of wall, the whole limestone crown was arranged to face arriving ships — which means the land-bound visitor spends days looking at the city from angles its architects considered secondary. The sunset cruise corrects this in ninety golden minutes: out of the old port as the light goes long, along the seaward walls with Fort Lovrijenac and the Bokar bastion catching fire, around Lokrum island's pines, and back as the lamps come up inside the walls and the city does its nightly impression of its own postcard.

The format is deliberately simple — a comfortable boat (the karaka-style replica galleons run the theatrical version; catamarans and wooden cruisers the mellow one), a welcome glass of wine or local liqueur, and a route that exists entirely in service of the light. The commentary, where offered, stays light; the real programme is watching the walls shift from bone-white through honey to ember while the Srđ ridge behind holds the last pink, and the photographs take themselves. Seabirds work the wake, superyachts and sea kayaks share the water in mutual incomprehension, and for fifteen minutes in the middle the whole Adriatic appears to have been arranged by a lighting director with an unlimited budget.

Craft: check the sailing time against actual sunset (operators shift schedules through the season; the boat should be seaward of the walls AT sunset, not motoring home), sit port side going out for the wall-side rail, and bring a light layer — the breeze finds bare shoulders the moment the sun drops, even in August. The cruise pairs naturally as the hinge of an evening: walls or Lokrum in the late afternoon, boat at golden hour, dinner in the old town after — reservations made for thirty minutes later than you think, because disembarking crowds move at contented speed. In shoulder season the light is lower, the water calmer and the boats emptier: April, May and October are quietly the connoisseur's slots.
