The Elafiti Islands are Dubrovnik's pressure valve: a scattering of green, largely car-free islands northwest of the city — Koločep, Lopud and Šipan are the inhabited three — where the Republic of Ragusa's sea captains built their summer villas and the modern city goes to remember what quiet sounds like. When the old town's marble streets hit cruise-ship density by mid-morning, the correct response is a boat: the island-hopping day cruise is Dubrovnik's classic decompression, and it needs no more justification than pine shade, clear water and lunch aboard.

Each island keeps its own character. Koločep, the smallest and nearest, is a hamlet wrapped around two coves, all oleander lanes and swimming platforms — the snorkelling stop. Lopud is the beauty: a palm-lined harbour promenade under a ruined fortress, the Franciscan monastery restored into improbable elegance, and — the headline — Šunj beach across the island's saddle, one of the Adriatic's rare true sandy beaches, shallow for a hundred barefoot metres (the walk over takes twenty minutes; the golf-cart taxis exist for the return). Šipan, the largest and sleepiest, trades beaches for olive groves, vineyard lunches and the fifteenth-century villa ruins that earned it the nickname "island of the nobles." Most cruises land on two or three with generous swim stops between; the fish-picnic format — grilled catch, local wine, unlimited Adriatic — remains the honest standard.

Craft: book the boat with an eye on the itinerary (Lopud + Šunj time is the quality marker), take the morning departure for the calmest water and best light, and pack the trinity — swimwear worn, towel, reef-safe sunscreen — plus cash for sunbeds and gelato; the islands are charmingly card-averse. Water shoes earn their keep on Koločep's rock entries. The day runs roughly 9 to 5 out of the old port or Gruž harbour, and it slots best mid-stay: two days of walls and stairs, then the sea day, then back to the kingdom's landward pleasures with your patience restored.
