The Night Safari solved the oldest problem in zoos: most animals are nocturnal, and daytime visitors see them asleep. Opened in 1994 as the world's first night zoo, it flipped the schedule — 35 hectares of rainforest beside the reservoir, lit to imitate moonlight, holding a thousand animals from 100 species at the hour they're actually living. Thirty years on it remains the best evening in Singapore and the one attraction locals still take visitors to without irony.

The tram is the spine: a 40-minute guided loop through seven geographic zones, past Himalayan tahr on their cliff, sambar deer wandering close enough to touch (don't), rhinos, tapirs and the lions' ridge — the open-sided carriages and the near-darkness produce sightings that feel earned rather than displayed. But the tram is half the park: four walking trails thread the forest between habitats, and they're where the magic concentrates. The Fishing Cat Trail after 9 PM, when the tram crowds thin, delivers leopards overhead in the Leopard Trail's glass walkway, flying squirrels mid-glide, and the wallaby enclosure you walk through unfenced.

Book the dated entry with tram slot online — the park caps nightly entries and weekends sell out — and take the earliest (7:15 PM) slot: tram first while energy is high, trails after, Creatures of the Night show (nightly, amphitheatre) whenever it fits. Getting there is the one friction: it's 30–40 minutes north of the centre (Khatib MRT + shuttle is the smooth route). No flash photography — enforced, and the phone-torch tourist is the park's one villain. Bring repellent; the mosquitoes also love the night shift.

  • Earliest tram slot (7:15 PM) booked ahead — nightly caps
  • Mosquito repellent, seriously
  • No flash, no phone-torch: night vision is the whole point
  • Walking trails after the tram, especially Fishing Cat after 9
  • Khatib MRT + Mandai shuttle as the smooth route north
