Kathmandu on $20, $55 or $180 a day

How much does Kathmandu cost per day? Budget travellers get by on about $20 a day, mid-range trips run around $55, and luxury starts near $180 — accommodation, food, transport and activities included.

That makes Kathmandu the 3rd cheapest of 82 cities for a mid-range trip — see all 82 ranked.

Kathmandu is the gateway to the Himalayas — a chaotic, ancient, and deeply spiritual city of 1.5 million at 1,400 metres, surrounded by eight of the world's ten highest mountains. The old city's UNESCO World Heritage temples, the living goddess tradition of the Kumari, the burning ghats of Pashupatinath, and the impossible panoramas of snow-capped peaks from viewpoints above the valley make Kathmandu one of the world's most extraordinary places to arrive.

🎒 BUDGET INSIDER TIPS

Thamel is the tourist hub — useful for gear and information but overpriced for food. Walk 10 minutes from Thamel into Ason Bazaar or Indra Chowk for real local prices. Dal bhat is the best budget meal — the "dal bhat power, 24-hour" refill tradition means you eat until full for one set price. The Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath ("Monkey Temple") are both extraordinary and cheap. Water: drink only bottled or filtered water. Food: cooked fresh, hot food at busy local restaurants is generally safe.
