Museum Island is what happens when Prussian kings spend a century competing with the Louvre: five monumental museums packed onto a single island in the Spree, built between 1830 and 1930, flattened in the war, painstakingly resurrected since, and UNESCO-listed as an ensemble. David Chipperfield's James Simon Galerie — a colonnaded white entrance building added in 2019 — now ties the island together and sells the day ticket that covers everything open.

The essential stop is the Neues Museum, itself the best exhibit: Chipperfield's restoration deliberately kept the war scars, bullet holes and burnt frescoes visible, laying new brick alongside ruined grandeur. Its star is the bust of Nefertiti, 3,350 years old and unnervingly alive, alone in a domed room where photography is forbidden and the queue shuffles past in involuntary silence. Around her: the Egyptian collection, Schliemann's Trojan gold (the contested parts are in Moscow; the story is told honestly), and the haunting Bronze Age "Berlin Gold Hat."

Know before you go: the Pergamonmuseum — the island's most famous name — is closed for renovation into the late 2020s, its Ishtar Gate and Pergamon Altar out of reach. The temporary "Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama" rotunda across the water shows Yadegar Asisi's 360° panorama of ancient Pergamon plus key sculptures, and softens the blow. Meanwhile the Alte Nationalgalerie (Caspar David Friedrich, Menzel, the German Romantics), the Altes Museum's Greek and Etruscan bronzes, and the Bode's sculpture collection at the island's prow absorb whatever time the Neues leaves you.

Strategy: day ticket at the James Simon Galerie, Neues at opening before the Nefertiti queue forms, one more museum before lunch, then the Lustgarten lawn in front of the cathedral for the break. Two museums per day is the sustainable dose. Thursday evenings run late hours at several houses, and the first Sunday of the month is free — with matching crowds.

  • Day ticket from the James Simon Galerie — covers every open house
  • Neues Museum at opening, before the Nefertiti queue forms
  • Pergamon expectations managed: main house closed into the late 2020s
  • Small bag; cloakrooms are mandatory for anything bigger
  • Two-museum limit per day — the island punishes completists
