Berlin TV Tower
The GDR's 368-metre flex on the Alexanderplatz skyline — Germany's tallest structure, a 40-second lift, and the city flattened out below.
About Berlin TV Tower
The Fernsehturm was built by East Germany between 1965 and 1969 as a statement piece: a 368-metre needle over Alexanderplatz, visible from every corner of divided Berlin, deliberately taller than anything the West had. The propaganda backfired gloriously — when sun hits the steel sphere, the reflection forms a giant cross visible across the officially atheist republic. West Berliners named it "the Pope's Revenge"; the GDR tried engineering it away and failed. It's still Germany's tallest structure, and reunified Berlin has adopted it as its most-loved silhouette.
The lift takes forty ear-popping seconds to the observation deck at 203 metres, and Berlin's virtue as a viewing city is its flatness: nothing blocks anything, so the whole urban story lays itself out — the Wall's course still legible as a seam of newer buildings and parkland, Museum Island and the cathedral at your feet, Tempelhof's vast field, the Soviet-scale boulevards running east. The window displays identify everything; sunset makes the east-west contrast in streetlight colour (sodium orange vs LED white — the divided grid never fully merged) genuinely visible.
One floor up, the Sphere restaurant rotates — a full revolution every hour, GDR retro-futurism with prices matching the altitude. The bar level is the reasonable compromise: a drink at the window beats the queue-priced restaurant, and the slow spin does the sightseeing for you.
Book the skip-the-line timed ticket online, always: the walk-up queue at Germany's most-visited tower runs past an hour in season while ticket-holders ride up in minutes. Sunset slots are the premium and sell out days ahead; the 9 PM-plus slots on summer nights are the sleeper pick — city lights, no queue, and Alexanderplatz's neon buzzing below when you come down.
