Ancient Athens end to end in six hours
Museum first, then the rock, the village under it, the Agora where the city actually governed itself, and lunch at Monastiraki.
Six hours buys the whole classical city and the order matters more than usual. The Acropolis Museum goes first — it is air-conditioned, it explains what you are about to stand on, and it is the one thing on this list that is better before than after. The Agora goes late because it is flat, shaded and half-empty by four, and because it is the site that rewards having already seen everything else.
The route, stop by stop

Acropolis Museum
Go before the rock, not after. The top floor is the Parthenon frieze laid out at full scale and facing the real thing.

Acropolis
Enter from the south slope and come down the west. The combined ticket covers seven sites for five days.

Areopagus Hill
Ten minutes on the marble for the view back up at the Propylaea and out over the Agora you are about to walk.

A Cycladic village of about thirty houses built into the north slope by island masons in the 1840s. Residential — walk quietly.

Finish at the crossroads — Hadrian's Library on one side, the flea market on the other, and a metro station under it.
