The museum quarter and De Pijp in six hours
Vondelpark into the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum, then east to the brewery and the Albert Cuyp market.
Two of the best museums in Europe are 300 m apart, which is the good news and the problem: back to back they are five hours of standing. This route puts the park first, the Van Gogh second while you are still fresh, and sends you east into De Pijp afterwards for food rather than a third gallery. Book both museums online — neither sells a useful walk-up ticket in season.
The route, stop by stop
-
Vondelpark
Start in the park rather than the queue. Enter at the Stadhouderskade end and walk its length east.
-
Van Gogh Museum
Go here before the Rijksmuseum. It is smaller, chronological, and the one you want attention left for.
-
Rijksmuseum
Three minutes across the square. If you have 90 minutes, do the Gallery of Honour and the 17th century only.
-
Heineken Experience
A brand tour in a former brewery rather than a museum — worth it for the building and the tasting, not the history.
-
Albert Cuyp Market
Finish where Amsterdam eats: 250 stalls, six days a week. Stroopwafels made in front of you beat the packaged ones.
