Bruges vs Brussels
Bruges or Brussels? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Bruges
Flanders' best-preserved medieval city: a ring of canals round the Markt and its belfry, a beguinage and almshouses, and the paintings of Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling in the city they were made for. The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000; stay the night and it empties once the day-trippers leave.
Brussels
The EU's bilingual capital — the gilded guildhouses of the Grand-Place, Art Nouveau facades, and a national obsession with beer, waffles, chocolate and frites. It's also the natural base for the Belgian Grand Prix: the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the forested Ardennes lies about 90 minutes southeast, its Eau Rouge the most revered corner in Formula 1.
