Bologna vs Venice
Bologna or Venice? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Bologna
The capital of Emilia-Romagna and the home of tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini and mortadella, with the oldest university in the Western world and more than 38 kilometres of porticoes in its medieval centre. Red-brick towers, market lanes and arcaded streets make it one of Italy's best cities to walk, and Modena, Ferrara and Florence are each under an hour away by train.
Venice
A city built on oak piles driven into a lagoon, with no cars, no through-roads and a thousand years of trade behind every façade. The crowds on the Rialto are real, but Venice empties after six — and Cannaregio at night, or Torcello on a winter morning, is as quiet as anywhere in Italy.

| Best months | April–June and September–October. July and August are hot and humid, and many trattorie close in August; trade fairs fill the hotels several times a year, so check the dates before booking. | April–May and late September–October. Winter is cold, quiet and often the best time; the day-tripper crush peaks June–August. |
| Climate | Humid subtropical, close to continental: hot, muggy summers (daily means about 25°C, highs above 30°C) and cold, often foggy winters (3–4°C). Rain is spread through the year, wettest in November. | Humid subtropical, moderated by the lagoon: hot muggy summers (Jul–Aug, 28–30°C), cold damp winters (Dec–Feb, 3–8°C) with acqua alta flooding most likely November–January. |

| Safety | Safe. Bikes are stolen often, pickpockets work the central station and crowded buses, and the university streets around Piazza Verdi are noisy and scruffy late at night. | Very safe; the real risks are pickpockets on packed vaporetti and around San Marco, and restaurant bill-padding in the tourist streets. |
| Tipping | A cover charge (coperto) of €2–4 a head is usual on the bill, and tipping is not expected; round up or leave a few euros for good service. | Service is usually included as "servizio" or coperto. Rounding up is normal, 10% is generous, and nothing is expected in a bar. |
