Lindt Home of Chocolate
The 9-metre chocolate fountain and everything behind it — Switzerland's chocolate story, an unlimited tasting hall, and the world's biggest Lindt shop.
About Lindt Home of Chocolate
The Lindt Home of Chocolate opened in 2020 beside the working Kilchberg factory on the lake's west shore, and its entrance hall states the thesis without words: a 9.3-metre chocolate fountain — 1,500 litres circulating over a giant whisk — that is officially the world's largest and unofficially the most photographed indoor object in the canton. Behind it, a genuinely well-built museum tells how a landlocked alpine country conquered a tropical crop: the cacao's journey from Ghanaian farms, the 19th-century Swiss innovator cascade (Cailler, Suchard, Sprüngli, and Rodolphe Lindt's 1879 conching accident — he left a mixer running over a weekend and invented melting chocolate), and the industrial ballet of the modern production line visible in miniature.
Everyone is honest about the visit's emotional centre: the tasting rooms. The tour ends in halls of dispensers — warm liquid chocolate in three shades, unlimited Lindor spheres in every wrapper colour, pralines — where "take one" is a suggestion nobody enforces and adults quietly re-queue. Pace yourself early or don't; both are traditions. The chocolateria runs masterclasses (make-your-own bars and truffles, booked separately and well ahead) and the attached shop is the largest Lindt store on Earth, with factory-outlet corners that justify suitcase space.
The audioguide-included entry ticket is timed — book online, weekends sell out — and the trip out is part of the charm: 15 minutes on the S-Bahn to Kilchberg, or better, the lake boat from Bürkliplatz in season, arriving by water with the Alps behind you. Ninety minutes to two hours covers museum plus concentrated tasting damage; combine with a west-shore lakeside walk back toward the city, partly to see the villas, mostly as penance.
