The Belvedere is two baroque palaces facing each other across a stepped formal garden, built in the early 1700s for Prince Eugene of Savoy — the empire's greatest general, who never married, spoke French, and spent his war fortunes on architecture and a private menagerie. The Upper Belvedere, the showpiece he used only for parties, is now the reason half the world visits: it holds the largest Gustav Klimt collection anywhere, crowned by The Kiss — two metres of gold-leaf embrace that survives every reproduction and still stops the room. Standing before the actual gold, watching it shift with your angle, is one of art tourism's reliable magic tricks.

The Klimt rooms alone would justify entry (Judith I, the landscapes, the portraits), but the supporting cast is serious: Egon Schiele's raw counterpoint one room over, Kokoschka, French Impressionists Eugene would have found scandalous, and — the sleeper — Messerschmidt's "character heads," 18th-century sculpted grimaces that read as contemporary art gatecrashing the baroque. Upstairs, Napoleon crossing the Alps on his rearing horse (David's version) faces down the marble hall where the 1955 State Treaty restored Austria's independence — signed on the balcony over the garden.

Book the timed Upper Belvedere ticket ahead (The Kiss's room caps informally in season; first slot 9 AM has it nearly private), give the palace two hours, then walk DOWN the garden between the sphinxes — the view over the pools to the Lower Belvedere with the city behind is the classic Vienna postcard, free at all hours. The Lower palace hosts temporary exhibitions worth checking; the combined ticket decides itself accordingly. Tram D from the Ring stops at the gate.

  • Schiele room courage — it's the counterpoint
