Marjan and the Meje shore in six hours
Up the steps to Marjan's summit, down to the hermit caves of St Jerome, a swim at Kašjuni and Meštrović's villa by the sea.
Marjan is the wooded hill that fills the western end of Split's peninsula, 178 metres high and a municipal forest since the 13th century; the town statute already forbade cutting its trees in the 14th. This route climbs it from the harbour by the old stairway, crosses it to the south side and comes back along the shore, past the villa Ivan Meštrović built as his summer home. Bring a swimsuit and water; there are few cafés after the first viewpoint, and buses run back to the centre from the gallery.
