San Diego's downtown waterfront is a museum of ships, and the old town behind it survived because it was neglected long enough to be saved. This route walks the bay from the Maritime Museum to Seaport Village and turns inland into the Gaslamp.

  1. Star of India

The Maritime Museum's flagship, launched in 1863 and the oldest ship in the world that still goes to sea.

  2. USS Midway Museum

An aircraft carrier in service from 1945 to 1992, with planes on the flight deck and veterans as guides.

  3. Seaport Village

Shops and restaurants built to look like a harbour village, on the waterfront walk between the ships and the convention centre.

  4. Gaslamp Quarter

Sixteen and a half blocks of Victorian buildings that survived because the city ignored them for most of the 20th century. The arch over Fifth Avenue marks the entrance.
