Sky Lagoon is Reykjavik's 2021 answer to the airport-adjacent icon: a geothermal lagoon built into the Kársnes headland ten minutes from downtown, whose 75-metre infinity edge dissolves into the open Atlantic — Bessastaðir (the president's house) and Keilir's cone across the water, lighthouse blinking, and in winter the genuine possibility of northern lights overhead while you float. Where the Blue Lagoon is milky-blue spectacle in a lava moonscape, Sky Lagoon is dark water, turf-and-timber design and ocean horizon: the boutique counterpart, and increasingly the local vote.

The signature is the Ritual — a seven-step circuit folded into the cliff: the warm lagoon, a bracing cold plunge, the sauna behind the largest single sauna window in the world (the ocean fills it entirely), a cold mist walk, a silica-adjacent body scrub, steam, and back to the water — included in the standard packages and worth doing properly once before settling at the infinity edge with a drink from the swim-up bar. The turf-house architecture and the deliberate no-children-under-12 policy keep the register adult and calm; conversation hums at Icelandic volume, which is to say barely.

The comparison every visitor wants settled: Blue Lagoon for the once-in-a-lifetime alien landscape and airport logistics; Sky Lagoon for the better DESIGN, the sunset (it faces west — the Blue Lagoon's steam sees no horizon), the city proximity, and the second soak of the trip. Doing both is not excess; they're different instruments.

Practicals: timed pre-booking (sunset slots go first — Reykjavik's late golden hour in summer means 10 PM sunsets from the water), packages tier by changing-room privacy (Saman public vs Sér private), swimsuits rentable, hair ties advisable, and the ten-minute taxi/bus from downtown makes it the easy evening add to any city day. Two hours covers the ritual and a long float; winter visits double as the city's most comfortable aurora platform — cloud permitting, as always in Iceland.

  • Sunset slot booked first — it faces west on purpose
  • The seven-step Ritual done properly once
  • Adults-only calm embraced (12+ policy)
  • Winter aurora possibility from the water, cloud permitting
  • Hair tie; the sauna window deserves your full attention
