The Alcazaba and the old town in three hours
The Moorish fortress, the Roman theatre beneath it, the Picasso museum and the cathedral with one tower.
Málaga's old centre sits in the angle between the fortress hill and the port, and most of it is pedestrianised. Two thousand years are stacked on one slope here: a Roman theatre, a Moorish palace above it, and the Christian city below. Start at the Alcazaba when it opens, before the heat.
The route, stop by stop
-
Alcazaba
The 11th-century Moorish palace-fortress, a climb through gates, courtyards and fountains with the port below. A combined ticket also covers the castle on the hill above.

Teatro Romano
A Roman theatre from the time of Augustus, buried and forgotten until it was found in 1951 during building work. Free, and you can see most of it from the street.

Museo Picasso Málaga
Picasso was born a few streets away in 1881. Some two hundred works given by his family, in a 16th-century palace with Phoenician walls in the basement.
-
Catedral de Málaga
Called La Manquita, the one-armed lady, because work stopped in 1782 before its south tower was built, and it never was. The roof tour is the best view of the old town.

Calle Larios
The marble-paved shopping street of 1891 that runs down towards the port. The stone is polished smooth enough to be slippery after rain.
