Ha Long Bay Cruise
Two thousand limestone towers rising from jade water — why the overnight boat beats the day trip, and how to choose among 500 cruises.
About Ha Long Bay Cruise
Ha Long Bay is the landscape that launched a thousand screensavers and survives the fame: nearly two thousand limestone karsts rising sheer from the Gulf of Tonkin's green water, sculpted over 500 million years into towers, arches and hidden lagoons — the descending dragon of the name, UNESCO-listed twice over, and still capable of silencing a sundeck when the engine cuts among the pillars.
The structural decision is day trip versus overnight, and the answer is firm: sleep on the water. Day trips from Hanoi spend six hours on buses for four in the bay's busiest corridor; the overnight cruises (one or two nights) reach the quieter reaches, and deliver the bay's two best hours — dusk with the karsts silhouetted and the day boats gone, and dawn mist threading the towers with only anchored neighbours in sight. The standard 2-day/1-night pattern packs the greatest hits between: Sung Sot ("Surprise") cave's cathedral chambers, Ti Top island's summit-view climb and swim beach, kayaking into lagoon rings through karst tunnels, and the cooking-demo/squid-fishing evening rituals of the fleet.
Choosing among 500-odd licensed boats reduces to three honest tiers: budget party boats (young, loud, fine if that's the brief), the mid-range boutique steel fleet (en-suite cabins with picture windows, good kitchens, small group sizes — the sweet spot the bookable products cover), and the luxury lines with spas and balconies for the honeymoon budget. The routing note that matters: Lan Ha Bay, the contiguous southern extension, offers the same karsts with a fraction of the traffic — boats routed there trade the famous name for emptier water, the connoisseur's swap.
Practicals: Hanoi transfers (2–2.5 hours via expressway) bundle with most cruises — take the bundle; check kayaking is included rather than upsold; pack light for one night (bags store at Hanoi hotels), swimwear year-round, layers October–March when the bay does atmospheric mist at 18°C rather than summer's 35. Book ahead in the October–April high season, and treat weather-cancellation policies as a real selection criterion — the bay closes for storms a few days each summer. It's Vietnam's one unmissable, and the overnight does it justice.

- Lan Ha routing for the same karsts minus the traffic
- Kayaking confirmed as included, not upsold
- Light overnight bag (main luggage stores at Hanoi hotels)
- Layers Oct–Mar; the bay does 18°C mist beautifully
