Accademia Gallery — David
Michelangelo's David under the dome built for him — plus the unfinished Prisoners, the best sculpture lesson on Earth. Book or queue two hours.
About Accademia Gallery — David
The Accademia is a small museum with one of the most famous objects humans have made, and the honest description of a visit is: you come for David, and David delivers. Michelangelo carved him from 1501 to 1504 out of a nineteen-foot block of Carrara marble that two other sculptors had already worked and abandoned — "the giant," Florence called it, and it had stood botched in a cathedral yard for forty years before a 26-year-old took it on.
What no photograph conveys is the scale and the tension. David stands 5.17 metres on his plinth under a skylit dome built for him in 1873, when the city moved him indoors from Piazza della Signoria (a replica stands there now). Circle him slowly: the pose reads calm from the front, but from the right you see what Michelangelo actually froze — the moment before the fight, sling over the shoulder, veins up in the throwing hand, the face turned toward Goliath with an expression that shifts from confidence to fear depending on your angle. It was carved as republican propaganda: Florence as the underdog facing giants. It has outlived every giant since.
The approach corridor holds the museum's second masterpiece hiding in plain sight: the four Prisoners, unfinished figures wrestling out of their raw blocks, meant for a papal tomb that shrank. Whether Michelangelo abandoned them or left them deliberately incomplete is a 500-year argument; either way, no better lesson in how sculpture happens exists anywhere. Give them real time before the hall pulls you forward.
The museum otherwise is modest — a musical-instrument room with a Stradivarius, gold-ground altarpieces — and 90 minutes covers it honestly. Book the timed priority entry always: the Accademia's walk-up queue is somehow worse than the Uffizi's. The 8:15 slot or the last hour are the calm windows; midday is a corridor of tour-group headsets.
