Doha in three hours is the Corniche and the two things at either end of it, which is the only part of the city built for walking. Do it after four: between eleven and three, half the year, the heat makes this route genuinely unwise. The museum is I. M. Pei's last major building and he came out of retirement for it.

  1. Souq Waqif

Rebuilt in the 2000s on the site of the original bedouin market, in mud render. Falcon souq at the north end.

  2. Museum of Islamic Art

Pei placed it on its own island so nothing could ever be built next to it. The collection spans 1,400 years.

  3. Doha Corniche

Seven kilometres of waterfront promenade around the bay, with dhows moored along it.
