Copenhagen was built as a harbour town and reads best from its water: the low-slung classic canal boats out of Nyhavn and Ved Stranden thread an hour-long loop that strings together more of the city than any land route could — under bridges with genuinely tight clearances (the guides' duck-your-head choreography is real), past the copper-spired Renaissance skyline, the new harbourfront's architecture parade (the Opera House across from Amalienborg, the Black Diamond library's tilted glass), the round masts of Christianshavn's houseboat canals, and yes, the Little Mermaid — who is best met from the water, where her famous smallness reads as intimate rather than anticlimactic, and the boat leaves before the tour buses do.

The guides run trilingual commentary with dry Danish delivery (the hundred-year-old wager about the stock exchange's dragon spire, which apartment Hans Christian Andersen couldn't afford, why the harbour is clean enough to swim in — a genuine civic brag with municipal baths to prove it), and the open boats in summer are the correct choice over the glass-roofed winter hulls whenever weather allows. Port side boarding gets the Nyhavn façade first; either side wins somewhere.

It's the best first-hour orientation the city sells — everything you'll walk to later gets flagged from the water — and among the cheapest, which is why the "hey, kayak instead" upsells exist for the athletic (harbour kayak tours run the same waters with more splash). Golden hour departures in summer stretch past nine and turn the harbour honey-coloured; the Christmas-season boats do blankets and gløgg. Book the timed ticket online in July–August when Nyhavn's quay queue backs up; otherwise it's a walk-on. Combine with a harbour-bath swim at Islands Brygge afterwards to complete the argument the guide was making: this city and its water are on excellent terms.

  • Open boat over glass roof whenever weather allows
  • Golden-hour departure in summer (light runs past nine)
  • Head-duck discipline at the low bridges — they mean it
  • Port side boarding for the Nyhavn façades
  • Islands Brygge harbour-bath swim after, to complete the point

The brewery that funded Danish science and art — elephant gates, the old cellars, a stable of dray horses, and probably the best museum beer terrace in Europe.

The Vikings and everything before and after — the Sun Chariot, lur horns, bog finds and the best Norse collection anywhere, in a prince's palace.
