Palermo in three hours
The bar-lined square, the city's great park, and the Japanese garden inside it.
The six-hour route covers the historic centre, which is monumental and closes at weekends. Palermo is the opposite — low, green, residential and busiest on a Sunday. The parks here were laid out by the same Frenchman who did much of the city's public landscape, and the Japanese garden inside them is the largest outside Japan. Start at the square and walk north into the trees.

Plaza Serrano
The centre of Palermo Soho, ringed with bars and a weekend craft market. The streets off it are the best low-rise architecture in the city.

El Rosedal
The rose garden at the centre of the Bosques de Palermo, holding eighteen thousand plants, a pergola and a lake with pedalos. Free, and busiest on a Sunday.

Jardín Japonés
Built for a 1967 royal visit and the largest Japanese garden outside Japan. Koi, taiko bridges and a tea house that does a proper matcha.

Planetario Galileo Galilei
A 1960s flying saucer on a lawn, floodlit at night, and an unofficial symbol of the city. The lawn around it is the end of the walk.
