Icherisheher and the boulevard in three hours
The walled old city, the maiden tower and the shah's palace, down to the Caspian promenade.
Baku's old city is a walled quarter of about twenty hectares inside a modern oil capital, and it is a UNESCO site in its entirety. The walk goes through it and comes out on the Caspian seafront, which the city has spent two decades landscaping. Flat throughout apart from the tower stairs.

The pedestrian spine of the modern city, running down to the old walls past 19th-century oil-boom facades.

Eight storeys of unexplained 12th-century stonework. Nobody agrees what it was for and the roof looks over the whole bay.

The 15th-century seat of the local dynasty, with a mosque, a mausoleum and a bathhouse in one complex.

On the Caspian boulevard below the old city, in a building shaped like a rolled carpet. The seafront park runs sixteen kilometres from here.
