Salzburg vs Vienna
Salzburg or Vienna? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Salzburg
Mozart's birthplace sits on the Salzach beneath a fortress on a cliff, its baroque old town of domes, squares and through-passages built by the prince-archbishops. The summer festival fills it with opera, Advent with markets, and the lakes and salt mines of the Salzkammergut and the Bavarian Alps are an hour away.
Vienna
Vienna is imperial Europe at its most concentrated — coffee houses where Freud and Klimt argued, concert halls where Mozart and Beethoven premiered their greatest works, and a food scene that invented the schnitzel and the Sachertorte. Remarkably affordable for a capital of such grandeur.

| Best months | May–June and September for walking weather; late July–August for the Salzburg Festival (book months ahead); late November–December for the Advent markets. | April – June, September – October |
| Climate | Cool and wet on the northern edge of the Alps: summers average 18–20°C with frequent thunderstorms, June to August are the wettest months, and winters hover around freezing, with snow. | Continental climate with warm summers (27°C) and cold winters (-2°C). Vienna's Christmas season (December) rivals Prague's for markets and atmosphere but with better museums to retreat into when it's cold. April–June is ideal: chestnuts bloom along the Ringstraße, café terraces open, and the opera season peaks. July–August is warm and pleasant but costly and crowded. |
| Visa | Schengen area — visa-free for 90 days for UK, US, Canadian and Australian passports; ETIAS pre-authorisation applies from its rollout. | Schengen zone — 90 days visa-free for most nationalities |
| Safety | Very safe. The only common crime is pickpocketing in the Getreidegasse crowds and at the Advent markets. | Extremely safe — consistently ranked one of the world's most liveable cities |
| Tipping | Round up or add about 10% in restaurants and cafés, telling the waiter the total as you pay rather than leaving coins on the table. | Round up to the nearest euro or leave 5–10%. Say the amount when paying: "Stimmt so" means keep the change. |
