Lyon vs Nice
Lyon or Nice? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Lyon
France's third city and its capital of food, where the Rhône and the Saône meet below the hill of Fourvière. Roman theatres, a Renaissance quarter threaded with covered passages and the silk workers' hill of the Croix-Rousse are all within walking distance, and the bouchons still serve the cooking of the mères lyonnaises.
Nice
The capital of the Riviera curves round the Baie des Anges behind the Promenade des Anglais. Its old town is more Italian than French — it was Savoyard until 1860 — with ochre lanes, a flower market and socca from a wood oven, and Monaco, Èze and Antibes are all a cheap train ride along the coast.

August is hot, and many bouchons close for the holidays. | May–June and September for warm sea and fewer crowds. February brings the Carnival and the lemon festival in Menton. |

Rain falls in every month, most in May and October. | Mediterranean and unusually mild: warm, dry summers (27–29°C), soft winters (13°C by day) with lots of sun. | Safety | Generally safe. Pickpockets work the metro, Part-Dieu station and the shopping streets of the Presqu'île, and parts of La Guillotière feel rough late at night. | Safe, with pickpockets on the Promenade, in the old town and on the trains to Monaco. Do not leave bags on the pebbles while swimming. |
| Tipping | Service is included in French bills, so tipping is optional: round up or leave a euro or two for good service at a bouchon, and up to 10% at a grand table. | Service is included (service compris). Leave small change or a few euros for good service; 5–10% is generous. |
