Granada vs Valencia
Granada or Valencia? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Granada
The last Moorish kingdom in Spain fell here in 1492 and left the Alhambra on its hill above the city. Across the valley the Albaicín's white lanes climb to the viewpoints, the Sacromonte's cave houses hold flamenco, almost every bar brings a free tapa with a drink, and the Sierra Nevada's ski slopes are an hour away.
Valencia
Spain's third city, and the home of paella, sits between a Gothic old town and a long city beach. A dried-up river became a nine-kilometre park running to Calatrava's white City of Arts and Sciences, and in March the whole city sets fire to itself for Las Fallas.

| Safety | Safe. Pickpockets work the Alhambra queues, Plaza Nueva and the Mirador de San Nicolás at sunset, and women offering sprigs of rosemary near the cathedral will then demand money for them. | Very safe. Pickpockets work the Central Market, the cathedral square and the beach promenade; keep phones off café tables. |
| Tipping | Tipping is modest: round up or leave 5–10% in a sit-down restaurant if service was good. At a tapas bar, leaving the coins from your change is plenty. | Tipping is modest: round up or leave 5–10% in a sit-down restaurant if service was good. Nothing is expected at a bar. |
