Bilbao vs Seville
Bilbao or Seville? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Bilbao
A former iron and shipbuilding city on the Nervión estuary that remade itself around Frank Gehry's Guggenheim in 1997. The medieval Casco Viejo is packed with pintxo bars, five Michelin-starred kitchens are in the city, and the beaches and cliffs of the Biscay coast are half an hour away.
Seville
Seville is the soul of Andalusia — a city of flamenco rhythms, orange-blossom scent, Moorish palaces, and a tapas culture so good that eating becomes the main attraction. The Alcázar, the Cathedral, and the endless evening passeo make it one of Europe's most seductive cities.

| Best months | May–June and September for the warmest, steadiest weather; August for Aste Nagusia, nine days of free concerts and fireworks, when rooms go early. | March – May, October – November |
| Climate | Oceanic and green: mild, damp winters with highs around 14°C, warm summers with highs of 25–26°C, and rain on about a third of days, most of it October to April. | Mediterranean climate with the hottest summers in Western Europe: July-August regularly hits 42-45°C. Outdoor sightseeing in July is genuinely dangerous without careful planning (before 10am and after 7pm only). March-May is the ideal time: Semana Santa (Holy Week) fills the streets with extraordinary processions, and the Feria de Abril (April Fair) is one of Europe's great festivals. October-November brings relief and the olive harvest. December-February is mild (15°C) and pleasantly uncrowded. |
| Visa | Schengen area — visa-free for 90 days for UK, US, Canadian and Australian passports; ETIAS pre-authorisation applies from its rollout. | Schengen zone - 90 days visa-free for most nationalities |
| Safety | Very safe. Watch bags in packed pintxo bars and at the Aste Nagusia fiestas in August; the San Francisco area across the river is rougher late at night. | Generally safe - watch for pickpockets near the Cathedral and in crowded markets |
| Tipping | Tipping is small: leave the coins or round up after pintxos, and 5–10% in a sit-down restaurant if service was good. | Not expected but appreciated. Round up or leave €1-2 at restaurants. Tapas bars: leave small change. Never less than you'd spend on a coffee. |
