Bilbao vs Málaga
Bilbao or Málaga? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Bilbao
A former iron and shipbuilding city on the Nervión estuary that remade itself around Frank Gehry's Guggenheim in 1997. The medieval Casco Viejo is packed with pintxo bars, five Michelin-starred kitchens are in the city, and the beaches and cliffs of the Biscay coast are half an hour away.
Málaga
Once just the airport for the Costa del Sol, Málaga has become a city break in its own right: Picasso's birthplace with a museum to match, a Moorish fortress above a Roman theatre, a city beach and some of the best tapas bars in Andalusia — with three hundred days of sun.
