Bilbao vs Granada
Bilbao or Granada? Both compared across the three travel tiers — budget, mid-range and luxury — for daily costs, hotels, food, things to do and the practical stuff that actually decides which one you should visit.
Bilbao
A former iron and shipbuilding city on the Nervión estuary that remade itself around Frank Gehry's Guggenheim in 1997. The medieval Casco Viejo is packed with pintxo bars, five Michelin-starred kitchens are in the city, and the beaches and cliffs of the Biscay coast are half an hour away.
Granada
The last Moorish kingdom in Spain fell here in 1492 and left the Alhambra on its hill above the city. Across the valley the Albaicín's white lanes climb to the viewpoints, the Sacromonte's cave houses hold flamenco, almost every bar brings a free tapa with a drink, and the Sierra Nevada's ski slopes are an hour away.

| Safety | Very safe. Watch bags in packed pintxo bars and at the Aste Nagusia fiestas in August; the San Francisco area across the river is rougher late at night. | Safe. Pickpockets work the Alhambra queues, Plaza Nueva and the Mirador de San Nicolás at sunset, and women offering sprigs of rosemary near the cathedral will then demand money for them. |
| Tipping | Tipping is small: leave the coins or round up after pintxos, and 5–10% in a sit-down restaurant if service was good. | Tipping is modest: round up or leave 5–10% in a sit-down restaurant if service was good. At a tapas bar, leaving the coins from your change is plenty. |
